| View in browser September 18, 2026 Good Friday evening. In this edition: Trump says he's banning CNN, MSNOW and Politico from the White House. Media Bans President Trump said that he is banning CNN, MSNOW and Politico from the White House "as a result of their constant 'reporting' FAKE NEWS," while threatening to bar other outlets as well. "Media Outlets shouldn't be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES when they're covering the President of the United States, the Trump Administration, or the United States of America. Other Fake News Media Outlets to follow," he wrote on Truth Social. The move raises new First Amendment questions over the administration's restrictions on press access and is likely to be challenged in court. "CNN stands fully behind our White House team and their fair and accurate reporting," the media outlet said in a statement. "We have a right under the U.S. Constitution to do that reporting without hindrance or interference from the government. Should the ban which President Trump threatened go ahead, it would be an illegal assault on that fundamental and constitutionally-protected right." Speaking in the Oval Office later in the day, the president said "we'll see" when asked whether he thinks such a ban would pass legal muster, but said he doesn't think a court "should allow fake news to be written day after day after day." "I think it's good to point it out, whether it survives or doesn't," he told reporters. He also said he wasn't trying to "intimidate" the press with his ban and threat to bar more outlets. "No, no, no, no. I dislike dishonest press, like you. I think you're terrible," he said when asked by Bloomberg News reporter Catherine Lucey. "I like to see honest press." Asked to justify the move, given his oath to uphold the Constitution, the president said it was because the outlets publish "fake news." "Our country has to have honest news," he said. "You know how fake their reporting is. It's one-sided. It's never good." The president said there was "no reason" in particular for why he was instituting the ban now. "It's really just cumulative stories over the last few years. You get sick of it," he said. "They purposely write negative news, and they do that because they want to try and diminish the Republicans and a Republican administration." He argued that media outlets that "purposely" write negative stories did not have a right to access the White House. "It's sick. I mean, there's something wrong with a country that can allow people to write purposely negative stories," he said. "Now, if they want to write them, that's fine. But I don't have to let them into my — into the people's house." It's the latest chapter in the president's long-running battle with the media, which has included lawsuits against news organizations and efforts to restrict some outlets' access to the White House. Last year, the president barred Associated Press reporters from some presidential events after the AP refused to adopt his preferred name for the Gulf of Mexico, prompting an ongoing First Amendment legal battle. During his first term, the White House revoked then-CNN reporter Jim Acosta's press credentials. CNN sued, and a federal judge ordered the administration to temporarily restore his credential.
